IRISH OAKS DAY AT THE CURRAGH: Nine fillies face the starter for the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh – the big race due off at 5.50pm.

Qualify, as expected, is a non runner. The shock 50/1 winner of the Epsom Oaks misses the chance to follow up. She was declared when the ground was good to firm but it was changed to good to yielding on Friday morning after 10.7mm of rain.

However, latest news from the course is that the ground is now good with a dry day forecast. Who’d be a trainer or clerk of the course for that matter !

Despite Qualify missing the race, her trainer Aidan O’Brien still has a third of the remaining nine strong field and his Words looks to have an outstanding chance.

Her dam Moonstone won this race for the stable in 2008 and they also had the winner last year with Bracelet. Words made a winning debut here last June and kept her unbeaten record with a win over Carla Bianca last time out in the Munster Oaks Stakes (today’s trip of 1m 4f) at Cork. Carla Bianca gave that form a timely boost with a win on Thursday in the Group 3 Meld Stakes at Leopardstown. Words clearly needs to improve further but that is likely given this is just her third start.

Curvy has been a revelation this year winning all four of her starts – beginning in handicap company and rising up the class ladder to Royal Ascot last time out where she won the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes. She is tough and is fully entitled to have a crack at this classic prize.

I’m not sure about Jack Naylor. She went to Epsom with a good chance on paper for the Oaks but could only finish sixth. It’s quite possible that this trip is just beyond her optimum.
