THE BETDAQ PUNTER returns with his usual mix of looking back on his betting week on BETDAQ and looking forward to this weekend.

He has bets this weekend in the football and cricket.

It was a better on the horses than the football for him last week.

How can he fare this weekend ?

Friday

Some days you can do nothing wrong, I only wish they came about a lot more often than they do! Three horses I have been following (on other peoples advice of course) ran in the first three races at Bangor and my only annoyance is not backing them in multiples, though I have no one to blame but myself (and work perhaps). Golden Hoof looked to have the best form in the opener so I had a go at BETDAQ odds of 2.35 and although lucky (Blackwater King seemed to be going better when he fell), all my account shows is profit, which is the name of the game after all. Violin Davis ran next and even 1.55 tempted me to take on the BETDAQ layers and he duly obliged by a hard fought length and three quarters but it was the novice hurdle that made my day complete. O’Faolains Boy has always been held in high regard by Rebecca Curtis (well, that’s what I read anyway), and as he cost a massive £100,000 at the sales, he needs to win a few decent races! Odds of 3.5 on BETDAQ were soon snapped up (including by me!), and he duly sauntered home by an, unlucky for the layers, thirteen lengths, leaving me to draw stumps and work out what to spend my winnings on.

Saturday

The dreaded happened – it comes to us all now and then however hard we try to avoid it, but my better half insisted I went shopping and the wording made me realise I had between little and no choice. Using possible work e mails as an excuse I managed to smuggle my tablet with me and thanks to some decent 3G signals I did get some bets on if not as many as I would have liked. My horse racing treble managed to become a single with Simonsig and Un Atout both ruled out of their respective races (the perils of antepost betting), but my one bet did it with a bit in hand, and is now my idea of the Gold Cup winner next month. BETDAQ odds of 1.82 weren’t exactly inspiring but were still better than SP, and as I had precious little time to mess about, one sizeable winning bet made looking at bedroom furniture a bit less of a chore! My football bets were put on in the morning (I wish I hadn’t bothered to be honest), with the Port Vale 0-0 result pretty much summing it up – after scoring six in their previous two games they couldn’t get near the net when I needed them to.

Sunday

My last chance for a bet on the African Nations and Nigeria looked pretty obvious to me, but then I know nothing (see other football bets). Odds on BETDAQ of 2.2 seemed over the top to me so in I went with a chunky bet, and although it was the standard tense final as it is in every European Championship or World Cup, there was only ever going to be one winner and I felt pretty pleased with myself – though how long I can keep myself away from the silly bets I enjoy so much is open to question?

Monday

Liverpool v West Bromwich Albion caused me some consternation prior to the game. As an Everton supporter I cannot bring myself to back Liverpool on principle, but nor could I see them losing at Anfield and I fancied a bet, however small or silly. Both teams to score seemed as good an idea as any (wrong!), and at BETDAQ odds of 1.76 I had a small bet to keep me amused – though nothing serious thank goodness.

Tuesday

Time to have another look at the horses though with all this rain the going seems to be creating more than it’s fair share of upsets. Assuming everyone else knows more than me (a pretty accurate assessment), I went for all the odds on shots to make a bit of fun of it, and by the end of the day I wished I hadn’t bothered. Three winners and three losers to level stakes (I never chase favourites) by definition saw a loss on the day (winning odds on BETDAQ were 1.77, 1.75, and 1.86), but not a lot of damage done and I had a laugh doing it – got to keep those BETDAQ layers interested for future plunges.

Wednesday

Three all-weather cards from four had me confused in what I thought was the National Hunt season and when I am at work, trying to deal with that many races mean I have to cut things down to manageable quantities. Handicaps invariably provide the better prices thanks to the varying weights so I decided to bet on the favourites to level stakes, stopping at a winner. Having gone for that concept it didn’t take very long to retire for the day having punted Be My Deputy who finished second at Musselburgh and then won with 4.3 shot M J Woodward at Southwell for a nice profit on the day and all over so quickly – I will try this again tomorrow and see if there is anything to my new found money making angle lol?

The football seems impossible to call, so a trip to the pub to watch Manchester United at Real Madrid seems the best call and with no financial involvement for a change.

Thursday

Handicap favourites again this afternoon but will they be as profitable as yesterday, or will I have to devise some kind of staking plan? The answer became clear sooner rather than later when Rolecarr scored by a nose after close to three miles at BETDAQ odds of 4.02) Fact is he was joint favourite but I was never unduly bothered as the other joint favourite was the one involved in the photo (Or De Grugy 3.96) so either way I was on a winner to half stakes, though it did cut my afternoon of fun rather short even if I did make a profit!

Conclusions:

Bet of the week – O’Faolains Boy at Bangor-On Dee last Friday. After two other winners I may have put a little bit too much on (if he had lost), but he romped home and I collected more than I expected.

Disaster of the week
– Port Vale only drawing away at Barnet – my main football bet of the weekend left in tatters.

Something for the weekend:
facup300FA Cup action should, in theory be a bit easier to solve this weekend though with my luck on the soccer all things are sadly possible. I rarely risk jinxing my beloved – Everton – but I just cannot see how they can fail at Oldham and for all the right reasons. Firstly, they will not take them for granted having fallen to lower league opponents more times than I care to remember, and secondly they seem certain to put out a very strong side in the never ending search for our next piece of silverware. With Liverpool losing to Oldham last time out there is an added incentive of one-upmanship while Oldham have since sacked their manager so all looks rosy even at the current BETDAQ odds of 1.45 they are my idea of a banker bet (gulp). With the other premiership sides on target for comfortable wins a small treble on Arsenal (1.33), Chelsea (1.22) and Everton (1.37) ought to pay off but only to a point as I invariably call one of them incorrectly!

Looking for other sports to get involved with has proved trickier than I expected but I may be tempted with a little cricket Sunday morning. Surely England are too good for New Zealand (not that I know much about cricket), so we may as well risk a point to keep my Sunday morning that little bit more enjoyable.

This week’s suggested bets (all prices with BETDAQ and correct at the time of writing):

Cricket Sunday
1pt England to beat New Zealand ODI

Weekend Football
3pts Win Everton to beat Oldham at 1.37
1pt win treble – Everton (1.37), Arsenal (1.33), and Chelsea (1.22)
