WEDNESDAY IPL: The Edge previews Sunrisers Hyderabad v Punjab Kings with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
Sunrisers Hyderabad v Punjab Kings
MATCH OVERVIEW:
We have a cracker from the IPL on Wednesday as Sunrisers Hyderabad host Punjab Kings in Hyderabad on Betdaq Betting Exchange ! We have two top class sides here, and it has genuine top of the league playoff implications. Punjab Kings have sat at the summit with 13 points from nine games – the standout side in this IPL by some distance, however they do come into this game off the back of back-to-back losses. Two pretty tight games, but they weren’t able to defend their scores. Sunrisers Hyderabad have played one game more than Punjab, but they have one point less. It’s a very competitive looking table at the moment, so this is a big game in the race for the playoffs.
Ricky Ponting has built something quite special at Punjab Kings. They arrived at this tournament as one of the most exciting batting outfits in world cricket, and they have backed that up all season. They didn’t fire with the bat last time out with 163/9 but in fairness, Gujarat Titans had to go right to the wire to chase it. Punjab chased down 264 against Delhi Capitals a couple of weeks ago, the highest ever successful run chase in IPL history, and they’ve barely broken a sweat doing it. The powerplay pair of Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya have been phenomenal, while Shreyas Iyer has been exceptional in the middle order.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have coped really well with the absence of Pat Cummins for much of the campaign with a persistent back injury, Ishan Kishan has done an admirable job as stand-in captain. They lost their last game against KKR at the weekend, but they had won their five previously! The batting has been explosive at times; this should be a cracker.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
Hyderabad has turned into a genuine batter’s paradise in recent years. It has short square boundaries – around 66-68 metres – and a fast outfield that makes life genuinely difficult for bowlers. The pitch is flat, hard and true with excellent bounce, and big scores have become the norm here. The first inning scores have been 156/9 (chased), 216/6 (won), 194/9 (won), 242/2 (won) and 165 all out (chased). Obviously the Hyderabad batting failed here at the weekend, but I’d definitely bat first if I won the toss in such good conditions. It’s very hard to see anything other than a high scoring game given both sides carry enormous batting firepower.
RECOMMENDED BET:
It’s no surprise to see a pretty even market here. Punjab have been superb in this IPL, probably the best well-rounded side and they basically tick every box. However, Sunrisers are in excellent form themselves, and when Head and Abhishek are at their best they can dismantle any attack. I’m happy to keep stakes small here before the off – you could make the argument that either side should be favourite based on their batting firepower. I do feel this is a proper 50/50 game, and it’s no surprise that the market is so close to 2.0 on either side. I actually think the toss will have an impact, and I feel the side who bats first will have an edge to win the game here in conditions. I’m happy to back the side who bats first after the toss, at 1.9 or bigger.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
This is one of the highest scoring venues in the IPL in recent years and with the batting firepower on offer from both sides, I wouldn’t go in expecting anything other than a big first innings score. As I said above, I do feel batting first will offer an edge, and I’m happy to support the side who bats first. Hyderabad loves high scores; last season we had 286 posted here! We actually had 242 posted here this season too, and I’d be very keen to support the batting side early, and certainly wouldn’t want to be on the bowlers for any extended period at this ground!
