Balogun, Pulisic, Malik Tillman and McKennie all looked sharp; the chemistry Pochettino spoke of in pre-tournament build-up was there for all to see when there was plenty of doubters coming into the tournament! Australia’s win over Turkey deserves enormous credit from a point of view that they fought hard to grind out a result, however they were played off the park really. 28% possession tells the story.
Australia showed they can defend in numbers and you’d have to expect them to do the same again here. I feel looking at the performance levels from Matchday one, you really want to be against Australia here. The market is obviously expecting a USA win here given they are 1.64, but I still feel there’s a little bit of value in that price. Given the volume of chances Australia conceded against Turkey and how much the USA created against Paraguay, I’d have the USA sub 1.6 here. They basically just have to be a little careful with Australia on the counter – I suppose if you were picking a negative with the USA; they do like to play a reasonably open game and that might open themselves up at times. They’ll have to be careful with teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda – only 20 years old and now Australia’s youngest ever World Cup scorer.

It’s hard to have a strong opinion on the goals market here given Australia created so little against Turkey but scored twice, and then they conceded so much but kept a clean sheet. Under 2.5 goals is the marginal favourite at 1.94, but you can fully understanding why that market is so 50/50. I’m happy to keep stakes small on this one, but the USA win looks the best bet at the odds. I expect the USA to get the job done here, but not without being tested as Australia sit back. Another angle is a draw for Australia a cracking result given the opening win, so small stakes looks a wise play here.
